At St. Winefride’s Catholic Primary School, we aim to ensure that every member of the community can thrive, be healthy and happy. We are all aware that positive mental health is key to everyone’s wellbeing. We are committed to ensuring that every member of our community is supported to have positive mental health and to access support if needed.

Good mental health is an important part of healthy child development. It helps children build positive social, emotional, behaviour, thinking and communication skills. It also lays the foundation for better mental health and wellbeing later in life.

Ways we help

  • Daily reflect - Each day the Children come into school and reflect on how they are feeling they record this to keep a record and see how they hopefully improve throughout the week or term. A member of staff will speak to any children who say they are sad or upset.

  • Mindfulness Activities - Each morning the children come into school and enjoy mindful activities such as colouring to put them into a positive relaxed mind set for the day. Calm music is played in the background for a peaceful atmosphere.

  • Claire Brierley - Registered Counsellor who provides weekly group and one to one sessions to children who are most in need of support.

  • Paws B (Growing Happiness) - A leading mindfulness curriculum for children aged 7 -11 in schools. Jo Pritchard comes in once every week to deliver sessions to classes on a rotated timetable.

  • A Quiet Place - Teaching the children mindfulness techniques they can use to help with confidence, anxiety and other mental health issues.

  • ELSA - Some of our Teaching Assistants are ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) trained. This gives them the tools they need to speak to children who may need support.

  • Ocean Room - A quiet space which is used for the younger children who need time away from the classroom to focus on social skills and emotions.

  • Charity days - Days to raise funds for charities and to raise awareness amongst the children of some of the difficulties people face.
